Big South announces tennis awards

Crest’s Amy Burch was named Big South 3A Conference girls tennis player of the year by the league’s head coaches. Burch led the 12-player all-conference team released by the Big South on Tuesday.

League runner-up South Point led the all-conference team with four selections: Madeline Killen, Kelli Patz, Kristen Rivera and Ashley Mull. Dual-team champion Forestview placed three on the team: Kaelan Forbes, Jennifer Javornik and Kady Forbes.

Ashbrook (Claudia Steffey, Hope McIntosh) earned two all-conference picks, Crest’s Victoria Powell joined Burch on the team and Kings Mountain’s Awanda Rithiphong also earned all-conference honors.

Ashbrook’s Richard Carsner was selected Big South coach of the year by his peers after leading the Green Wave to a third-place finish.

The Green Wave’s Steffey and McIntosh advanced as a doubles team to this weekend’s 3A individual state championships in Burlington. The tournament is set for Friday and Saturday. Burch also advanced to the state tournament in singles.

Asheville 6, South Point 1 — South Point (6-3) was eliminated 6-1 at Asheville. The 3A individual regionals will be held Friday and Saturday at Morganton Patton.

Four Big South singles, four doubles qualify for regional

The Big South 3A Conference girls’ tennis tournament began Wednesday at Forestview with four individuals and four doubles teams earning regional berths.

Crest’s Amy Burch, South Point’s Kelli Patz, Kings Mountain’s Amanda Rithiphong and South Point’s Madeline Killen advanced to the singles semifinals, which is enough to qualify for the regional.

Regional qualifiers on the doubles side were Forestview’s Kaelan and Kady Forbes, Crest’s Victoria and Jordyn Powell, South Point’s Kristin Rivera and Morgan Jones, and Ashbrook’s Claudia Steffey and Hope McIntosh.

The conference tournament continues with the semifinals and finals Thursday at Forestview. The 3A West regional will be held Oct. 21 and 22 at Morganton Patton.

South Point 7, Crest 2 — South Point’s Kellie Patz, Kristin Rivera, Ashley Mull and Caroline Law collected singles wins, while the doubles teams of Madeline-Killen-Morgan Jones, Patz-Rivera and Mull-Law also picked up wins. The Red Raiders (6-2, 4-1 Big South) will compete in the conference tournament on Wednesday.

South Point 8, North Gaston 0 — Madeline Killen, Kellie Patz, Morgan Jones, Kristin Rivera, Ashley Mull and Caroline Law won in singles for South Point. The doubles teams of Jones-Rivera and Brooks Churn-Syma Lakhani won in doubles for South Point, which hosts Crest on Thursday.

South Point 5, Ashbrook 4 — South Point picked up singles wins by Kellie Patz, Ashley Mull and Caroline Law. The doubles teams of Patz-Kristin Rivera and Mull-Law also won for the Red Raiders, who visit North Gaston on Oct. 4. Ashbrook’s Claudia Steffey, Jessica Mauney and Addy Goff won in singles. The doubles team of Steffey-McIntosh also picked up a win.

Forestview 5, South Point 4 (Tuesday) — Forestview picked up singles wins by Kaelan Forbes, Jennifer Javornik (default), Kady Forbes and Emily Milton. The Forbes-Forbes team also won. South Point’s Kristen Rivera and Ashley Mull won in singles. Kelly Patz-Rivera and Mull-Caroline Law won in doubles for South Point. The Jaguars (8-1, 3-0 Big South 3A) visits Ashbrook on Thursday.

South Point 8, Kings Mountain 1 (Thursday) — Madeline Killen, Kellie Patz, Kristin Rivera, Ashley Mull and Carolina Law won their singles matches last week.

In doubles play, Killen-Rivera, Patz-Law and Mull-Jamie Mendoza swept their matches. South Point (3-1 overall, 1-0 in conference play) will have its next match is Thursday at home against Ashbrook. For Kings Mountain, Elizabeth Baker won her singles’ match.

South Point 8, East Lincoln 1 — Madeline Killen, Kellie Patz, Kristin Rivera, Ashley Mull and Caroline Law picked up singles winners for South Point (2-1), which hosts Kings Mountain on Sept. 15. Doubles winners for the Red Raiders were Killen-Morgan Jones, Patz-Rivera and Mull-Law.



AUGUST 2011 | W TENNIS

Forestview 6, South Point 3 — Kaelan Forbes, Jennifer Javornik, Kady Forbes, Pressly McGill and Taylor Black won in singles for Forestview. The Forbes-Forbes doubles team also collected a victory. South Point’s Caroline Law won in singles, while the doubles teams of Ashley Mull-Kristin Rivera and Kellie Patz-Law also claimed wins. South Point (1-1) visits East Lincoln on Tuesday. Forestview (1-1) visits Clover today.
