MAY 2011 | SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS Fred T. Foard 12, South Point 2 — It’s been one thing after another for South Point’s softball team over the past few days.
First, starting shortstop Haley Stewart injured her knee in Wednesday’s first-round playoff win. The next day, catcher Jordan Wilson knocked out one tooth and chipped two others while trying to bunt in practice.
And then the pain kept coming Friday as Fred T. Foard crushed the Red Raiders 12-2 in six innings in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.

The Red Raiders (17-6) will visit the winner between R-S Central and Fred T. Foard on Friday.
MAY 2011 | SOFTBALL South Point 9, Kings Mountain 1 — The South Point High softball team did its part to stay alive in the race for the Big South 3A championship.
Now it needs help from Kings Mountain, which it beat 9-1 on Tuesday on the strength of a six-run second inning and a complete-game pitching effort from Taylor Mahaffey.
If the Lady Mountaineers win Thursday’s 6 p.m. contest at Crest, South Point and Crest would likely have a one-game playoff on Friday or Saturday for the conference’s top playoff seed.

APRIL 2011 | SOFTBALL South Point 8, North Gaston 1 — South Point High may not win the 2011 Big South 3A Conference softball title, but the Red Raiders kept the pressure on the league leaders Thursday with an impressive 8-1 victory over North Gaston.
Celebrating “Senior Day” for ace pitcher Taylor Mahaffey and infielder Katie Sneathen, the Red Raiders scored six runs in the first inning en route to a victory that avenged a 4-3 loss at North Gaston earlier in the season.
It improved South Point to 12-4 overall and 8-2 in the league. The Red Raiders still trail co-league leaders Crest and Kings Mountain (both 6-1) but created some distance between themselves and North Gaston (7-7, 6-3) in a tight league race.
